HFS Grade 6 Weekly Collections
(1/25/08)

This week’s queries…

How will I be remembered?

What difference in the world might I make?

Thoughts for Judy Harlan, recently departed HFS trustee, wife, mother, teacher, community volunteer, farmer, florist, friend…

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

-   Ralph Waldo Emerson-

Thank you to the parents and students of HFS who attended Judy’s viewings and/or her memorial service this week. For both the joys and sadness in life community is essential. Friends lift up with thoughts, prayers, and helping hands those who are crushed by grief or sadness. Friends multiply the joy in success, as well.

In peace,

Jonathan

NOTES from Humanities…

NOTES from Technology…

Science: Sixth grade had an extremely abbreviated week of class. We worked to finish our presentations on our electric motors. Also, we got our tests back that we took last Friday, and went over it in detail in class. We also hinted at our next unit, astronomy, which looks to be the most popular unit yet.

Math: While this week was abbreviated, we are beginning a project creating “Escher-type” tessellations. Project guidelines and a grading rubric have not yet been distributed; students are already thinking about the shape that will be the foundation of their tessellation. Details will be forthcoming. We have also been reviewing multiplication facts and equivalent fractions at the beginning of class. We can all benefit from this.

Social Studies: Seventh grade social studies continued its look at China. Our current events project was introduced informally this week, which will help us begin to look at China today, and the many fascinating problems it faces as it tries to flex its economic muscle. We are currently investigating the dynastic China and its cultural facets.

NOTES from Technology…

Math: During this abbreviated week, seventh grade math both ended and began a unit. We went over our test from last Friday, and went through any problems we thought were more difficult. Also, we began our unit called Accentuate the Negative. We will begin to dive into the unit in earnest next week.

Science: Seventh grade science spent much of the week working on the many projects we have going both on an individual and group level. We continue our ocean science unit and aim to have a test in a couple of weeks, after much of the project work is done.
