Harford Friends School uses Everyday Math as its math program in the Primary grades (1st and 2nd).  The program helps students understand the value of math and the application of mathematical thinking and reasoning. Students in the Intermediate class (grades 3 and 4) utilize a more traditional math program, Sadlier-Oxford, which provides an appropriate match for nine and ten year old neurological development where “math facts” skill development is a prime focus. However, no mathematics program is perfect. Teachers adapt and augment the curricula as needed to assure that students are provided the opportunity to solidify basic math facts, develop efficient, accurate algorithms, as well as discover the beauty of mathematical problem-solving, and math thinking and reasoning.
