Graduation
HFS News & Special Events“Three years ago, if you told me that I would have to give a speech, no matter how short, in front of this number of people, I probably would have tried to run and hide. My teachers can verify that I am not a fan of public speaking, but I think I’ve come a long way. And they are the ones who supported me and kept me trying.” — Emma
Graduation at Harford Friends School celebrates the culmination and successful completion of all the experiences, hard work and play, leading up to this day. It’s a transition and commencement of new and exciting adventures to come. We honor each student equally, none being elevated above the rest. We value each for their unique talents and gifts. The day is characterized by a tremendous sense of joy, connectedness, and community.
Although steeped in tradition, each year has its own tone determined by student consensus through Quaker process. The students select their own guest speakers and from themselves, who they wish to represent them. One class had each student reflect on a different aspect of their school experiences. They spoke of friendships, community, challenges overcome, and a joy of learning and being a part of HFS. Another class picked just a couple students to speak and printed the reflections of the others which they distributed at graduation. Each year, powerfully moving student presentations show honesty, strength, confidence, and phenomenal public speaking skills, as they share personal reflections of their HFS experiences.
Graduation celebrations usually begin with a graduate and alumni breakfast followed by the commencement proceedings, and culminate with a luncheon for everyone. Graduation is held on the first Saturday after the last class in June.
