End-of-Year Camping Trips

HFS News & Special Events

Each June, the entire middle school goes camping.  Deer Creek, Assateague Island, Smith Island, Harper’s Ferry, and Fox Island have all been destinations.  Genesee Valley Outdoor Learning Center organizes and guides the students through these three day, two night camping adventures.

It’s all about teamwork, cooperation, risk taking, stretching one’s comfort zones, responsibility, community, independence and interdependence.  Students learn map reading and are responsible for navigating to and from their destinations without the use of on-line map services or GPSs.  They pitch their tents, prepare all the meals and clean up, too.  For many students, this is their first time camping and being responsible for everything.  They hike, bike, canoe, go out in skipjacks and whalers, and rock climb.  They realize the impact that each of their lives has on each other.  They reflect on the past year’s accomplishments and strengthen friendships.
