HARFORD FRIENDS SCHOOL
CURRICULUM
Grades 6 - 8
The Harford Friends School curriculum is enriching, appropriately challenging, and intellectually stimulating. It addresses the particular social and emotional needs of young adolescents through a wide variety of teaching/learning techniques. The school takes an integrated, “hands-on, minds-on” approach to develop skills and extend knowledge.
The curriculum is comprised of English/language arts and social science (Humanities), science and mathematics (Technology), art, computer technology, music, physical/health/life education, and Spanish (Explorations). As a complete mathematics curriculum for grades 6-8, Connected Mathematics Project II (CMP II) is a problem-centered curriculum that uses an inquiry-based instructional model. CMP II helps students to see the connections between mathematics and other disciplines.
Service-learning, applied technology, library and media arts, conflict-resolution, and study skills are incorporated into every course.

“Life and learning consist of a continuous flow of experiences around situations that require problem-solving in both large and small ways. When we encounter life situations or problems we do not ask, ‘Which part is science? Which is mathematics? Which is history? and so on.’ Rather, we use whatever information and skills are defined around the problem.” (James Beane, 1993)
