HFS News & Special Events

Welcome to Friends!

Thank you for visiting our website to learn more about Harford Friends School.  As a prospective family or student, you will see a slice of life at HFS, as well as learn about curriculum, Quaker values, activities, financial aid, and the application process.

What makes Harford Friends so special? As one parent commented, it is “the magic that happens in our classrooms.”  No matter what is happening in the world around us that sometimes causes us concern, when visitors come to Harford Friends, their reaction is always one of awe!  Why?  The answer is simple:  this school is unique in every way!

In classes averaging 8 students, you see each teacher working with individual students and groups during the 50 minute period.  You watch all students engaged in school governance at the monthly Meeting for Business where collaborative decision-making is encouraged and modeled.  You witness the entire community gather weekly for Meeting for Worship, a Quaker practice that brings everyone together in peace to reflect on the good that is within each person.  These essential experiences empower students to take responsibility for their school culture.

In addition to learning academic content and specific skills in each subject, students in our K – 8 program explore talents and abilities that may not have surfaced in the past.  The Explorations program –Art, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish – provides a foundation in language, the arts, fitness, and culture, while our extensive field trip program expands learning beyond the walls of the school to local venues as well as overnight stays out of town.

The overall experience of a day at Harford Friends is one filled with student and teacher energy, commitment to excellence through inquiry, and a genuine zeal for learning with and from each other.

I encourage you to come for a visit to see HFS students and teachers in action!  Talk with our staff and students who will tell you exactly what it means to be part of the Harford Friends School community.  I look forward to meeting you in the near future!

In peace,

Clare Pitz, Head of School
