Babikow Memorial Scholarship

HFS News & Special Events

Established in memory of Ethel Plack Babikow, this scholarship is awarded each year to an HFS student who, in the opinion of the Scholarship Committee, best meets the scholarship’s qualifications.

Ethel Plack Babikow was mother and motivator to one daughter and three sons. She believed that each person has a unique relationship to God and that relationship manifests itself in a person’s lifestyle. Part of that lifestyle is the search for understanding and what makes things tick. She loved new ideas and encouraged all of her children to have an understanding and appreciation of the arts. She supported not only her children’s educational pursuits, but also those of many family and church members.

THE AWARD: The scholarship’s benefactors mandate that one-third tuition be awarded each year to one qualifying student.

ELIGIBILITY: Any student admitted to HFS who meets at least one of the Scholarship Qualifications and most closely matches the following criteria:

• A Quaker student who is affiliated with a Quaker monthly meeting.

• A student who has demonstrated a capacity to apply themselves fully and completely to rigorous academic challenges, and has demonstrated a genuine “love of learning.”

• One who has demonstrated a capacity and an appreciation for the arts.

PROVISIONS: These provisions apply to the recipient of the Babikow Memorial Scholarship:

• A student must be accepted to attend Harford Friends School in order to receive a Babikow Memorial Scholarship.

• The family of a student awarded the scholarship must accept the award in writing within two weeks (14 days) of the date of offer (determined by the date on the award notification letter).

• The scholarship will apply to the balance of the tuition due at the time of award and reduce, commensurate with the size of the award, all remaining deposit and tuition costs, regardless of payment plan.

• Awarding of the scholarship does not preclude families from applying for or qualified families from receiving financial aid awards.

• Receipt of the scholarship does not preclude families from applying for other scholarship offers or other sources of tuition funding.

• The award recipient is enrolled under the same rules, regulations, and entitlements as all other enrolled students. Award recipients withdrawn, removed, or expelled from Harford Friends School forfeit the scholarship award. Former award recipients are welcome to re-apply for the scholarship if and when they re-apply for admission to HFS.

• In the case of scholarship forfeiture, remaining scholarship money designated for the school year of record will be applied to the following school year’s Babikow Memorial Scholarship fund.

• Each year’s award recipient is expected to write two “notes of thanks” to the benefactors of the scholarship. The first should be written and delivered at the time of acceptance of the award. The second should be written within two weeks of the conclusion of the school year to which the funds are applied. It should include a reference to what the student feels he or she was provided the opportunity to learn and experience as a result of the scholarship award.

• A Babikow Memorial scholar who demonstrates personal growth and achievement within the HFS program, as evidenced by offers of re-enrollment, recommendations by faculty and the requisite letter-of-thanks to the benefactors of the scholarship award, will be granted the scholarship for the next school year. That decision is made, in consultation with the benefactors of the Babikow Memorial Scholarship, by the HFS Scholarship Committee.
