Welcome from the Head of School

HFS News & Special Events

Welcome to Harford Friends School!

It is my pleasure to share with the wider community all of the tremendous learning experiences that occur daily here at HFS, as well as an opportunity to address several of the frequently asked questions folks often have about Harford Friends School. One of the most frequently asked questions is…

What makes a Harford Friends education so special?

Students, parents, and teachers are the best responders to this question, though I will humbly offer an administrator’s perspective. Quite simply, there is a depth and richness of experience unparalleled.

Academically, students are challenged to engage and expand course themes and topics, seeking answers to “How?” and “Why?” questions, not only understanding the “Who-What-When-Where” facts.

Socially and emotionally, opportunities for independent decision-making and healthy risk-taking are provided, everything from student-run committees and monthly Business Meeting to outdoor survival skills and leadership training. The resultant awareness of themselves as individuals of worth and responsibility is critical to becoming stewards of their communities and world.

Spiritually, a Friends education seeks, through inquiry and reflection, to help students develop mindfulness – a spiritual awareness – to reveal the Godliness that binds all people to one another and to enrich a dimension of our lives so often overrun by the “busy-ness” of daily existence.

I encourage you to contact us via phone, email, or in-person.  However, nothing compares to visiting during the school day and seeing our students and teachers engaged in learning and teaching.

I look forward to meeting and getting to know you!

In peace,

Jonathan Huxtable, Head of School
