Meeting for Worship

HFS News & Special Events

At the heart of Harford Friends School is Meeting for Worship.  Friends (Quakers) worship as a group in expectant waiting on the leadings of the Spirit. We encourage and value appropriate speaking during Meeting. Each participant uses silence according to his or her own religious beliefs.

Once a week, for thirty minutes on Wednesdays, the school gathers for a Quaker Meeting for Worship in which all seek in silence the leadings of the Inner Spirit.  Individuals may be moved to speak, but in the absence of speaking, silence can be valued as a time of quiet reflection.  Preceding worship, advisory groups or other small groups of students and faculty may gather for fifteen to thirty minutes of Centering Time, held in each classroom beginning with a short period of silence and a query.  Queries are used to focus on a different spiritual theme that corresponds to one of the basic testimonies of the Religious Society of Friends.  Queries may also be used to open discussion about the life of the school community or other issues with which students are grappling as individuals and/or as a community.

Parents are welcome to join in Meeting for Worship. We strive to be broad enough in our approach to spiritual truths that persons of many religious persuasions can share our values.  At times we will solicit friends to enrich our Meeting for Worship with an opening message or query for our reflection.
