HARFORD FRIENDS SCHOOL TEAMS WITH GOUCHER COLLEGE TO PRESENT LECTURES ON THE PRE-TEEN YEARS

February 28, 2007: Harford Friends School, in conjunction with Goucher College’s Graduate Programs in Education, will offer the public a series of interactive lectures on the topic of pre-adolescent academic, social, and emotional development. Parents and teachers of current or soon-to-be middle school students are encouraged to attend any of the three scheduled programs to learn more about life with middle school children. Of particular interest to the presenters is working with an audience that will share its own observations, joys, concerns, and frustrations in working with or raising pre-adolescents, ages 10-13.

Dr. Phyllis Sunshine, director of Goucher’s Graduate Programs in Education, and Jonathan Huxtable, Head of Harford Friends School, will be the featured presenters. Dr. Sunshine holds a Master in Education degree from The Johns Hopkins University and a Master’s and Ph.D. from Penn State. Jonathan Huxtable served as the Middle School Dean of Students at Wilmington Friends School before becoming the founding head of Harford Friends. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Haverford College (PA) and a Master of Education from Harvard University.

“Harford Friends School is delighted to be able to offer this program to Harford County families, teachers, and youth workers,” stated Huxtable. “Dr. Sunshine and the wealth of expertise she brings to any discussion about middle school theory and practice is a tremendous resource for parents and everyone who works with pre-adolescents. I am looking forward to these sessions as much as anyone.”

The lecture series begins on Thursday, March 1st at 7:00 PM at the Bel Air branch of the Harford County Public Library. The second is scheduled to be held at the Jarrettsville branch on Thursday, March 22nd at 6:30 PM. The third will be held at Advent Lutheran Elementary School in Forest Hill on             Thursday, April 19th at 7:00 PM. A twenty-minute question and answer session will conclude the hour-long program. For more information, interested participants are encouraged to call Harford Friends School at 410.457.5099.
