Harford Friends School Granted Membership with Friends Council on Education
Street, MD - February 11, 2008 -
Harford Friends School is proud to announce that it has been granted full membership in Friends Council on Education in its first year of eligibility, joining such schools as Friends School of Baltimore, Sidwell Friends School (DC), George School (PA), Germantown Friends School (Philadelphia), and Wilmington Friends (DE).

FCE membership committee members visited HFS in 2006 and again in 2007, reporting that "the Quaker dimension at HFS is pervasive and impressive" and that "the School has made significant progress in a short period of time." As a result, the FCE Board approved and welcomed Harford Friends School into membership, making it the Council's 81st member school.

"We were impressed by the warmth, the positive energy, the commitment and the joy we found in everyone - board, administration, faculty and students. [HFS] should be very proud of what [it has] accomplished to date. The students are a delightful, positive bunch!" FCE Board Member Ellie Elkinton said of her visit to HFS.

"Harford Friends School is proud to have earned this distinction from Friends Council on Education. It affirms the vision of the founding Board of Trustees and validates our efforts to create a school in which the Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship permeate all that we do," said Jonathan Huxtable, Head of HFS. "Also, I am pleased that a small school like ours can be mentioned among other Friends schools whose reputations for outstanding academic programs grounded in Quaker values are well known. It is the dynamic interaction of school vision, community support, parental involvement, work of our teachers, and the vigor our students bring to the learning process that makes this recognition possible."

As the only national organization of Friends schools, the Friends Council on Education is in a unique position to assist schools and their teachers, students, and families by providing publications and programs to support the implementation of Friends values in the classroom and in the life of the school community.

Friends Council nurtures the spiritual life of Friends schools, strengthens the connections between the schools, and promotes Friends education through providing consulting services, professional development seminars, literature to support Quaker testimonies in school life, and peer network meetings across schools.
