GVOLC Field Trip

Genesee Valley Outdoor Learning Center (GVOLC) Field Trip

The trip to Genesee Valley offered students the opportunity to get to know one another through adventure, while setting a tone of “teamwork.” Jonathan Huxtable, Head of School, shared the following reflections: “GVOLC’s philosophy is so closely aligned with the school’s approach to ‘learning by doing’ that the trip was a natural extension of our program. The ‘Ah-Ha’ moment of the day occurred at the zip line. A student, hooked to the zip and stationed in a tree high above a lake, had to call across that water to confirm that there was, indeed, a team of classmates prepared to assure his/her safety. Any response other than a clearly shouted and unified “READY!” led the would-be ‘zipper’ to think twice about stepping off his/her platform. Once it was confirmed that a ‘team’ was ready and focused on the sweaty-palmed adventurer, his/her ability and willingness (and each student’s thereafter) to take a healthy risk was bolstered. The resulting screech of sheer elation, heard above the whirl of pulleys on cable, let everyone know just how “safe” he/she felt - safe enough to fly and safe enough to try. This is precisely the environment we are fostering at HFS.”
